Senior Planning Officer

£28,485 - £34,538 per annum, Grade I

It’s an exciting time to join West Berkshire District Council. Due to promotion, we are looking for a senior planning officer to join our small and dynamic planning policy team.  We have commenced work on our new local plan which will plan for development in the district and look forward to 2036.

West Berkshire is a largely rural area of which 74% lies within the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  Yet the district also adjoins urban Reading and lies within the Thames valley so the need for economic growth needs to be carefully balanced with the impact that growth will have on the quality of life of residents.

As a member of the planning policy team, you will be responsible for working collaboratively on all stages of the local plan and for engaging with our communities.  You will take ownership of specific projects and preparing supporting evidence.  You will gain experience of both urban and rural planning and be involved in a number of key areas of the council’s planning functions, including neighborhood planning and the creation of our brownfield register.

You are able to work on your own initiative and contribute imaginative ideas, as well as work to tight deadlines, and you have a flexible attitude to work and a passion for making individuals and communities’ lives better.  This is your chance to expand your breadth of experience.

In return, West Berkshire District Council offers excellent employee benefits such as flexible working, access to a wide range of relevant training, local government pension scheme, family friendly policies, a range of local discounts and much more.  You will also have a generous annual leave entitlement of 28 days per annum rising to a maximum of 33 days per annum, depending on how long you’ve worked for us.

This role has been identified as public facing in accordance with Part 7 of the Immigration Act 2017; the requirement to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence in English applies.

Interviews will be held week commencing Monday 2 October in our Market Street offices in Newbury.

For an informal discussion, please contact Sinéad O Donoghue on 01635 519488.
