Planning Policy Team Leader
Southwark is a large, ambitious and progressive council with a ‘can do’ attitude and strong reputation. We are wholly committed to our ‘Fairer Futures for all’ promises which ensures our residents and businesses are central to everything we do. Only the best is good enough for our customers.
Regeneration and conservation are at the heart of our plans for the borough’s future. We are committed to providing an excellent planning service, preparing innovative plans to improve places for people. This is your chance to plan one of the country’s most exciting boroughs, and make your mark on iconic locations such as Old Kent Road, Canada Water, Peckham, and Elephant and Castle.
As Planning Policy Team Leader you will write and develop planning policy, and provide supervision and support to Planning Policy Officers. You - and your very capable team - can look forward to training and support, to ensure that you keep on honing and developing your skills at the leading edge of practice.
Your team’s broad remit will span advising development managers on planning applications, enquiries and appeals; making decisions and recommendations on planning work; and negotiating with external organisations on matters with far-reaching financial and political consequences. We will look to you to advise a host of Council members, chief officers, committees, steering groups and departments on the work of the Planning Division. Crucially, you’ll champion innovative approaches to enhance the effectiveness of services.
A highly experienced and customer focussed planner, you will bring to the role a strong understanding of planning within an urban context. You are a specialist in either housing, viability, employment, the environment, or another relevant subject. We expect you to have a proven track record in achieving results to deadlines. A clear communicator of complex planning matters, you are equally at home writing reports and presenting ideas in person to diverse audiences including senior personnel and clients.
Southwark is a place with a rich and proud history, a strong sense of community and a great ability to transform and renew. It is a vibrant and enticing borough to live, work and visit. As a council we are successful, passionate and forward thinking.
In your role, we want you to feel supported, challenged and rewarded. You will benefit from our family friendly policies including flexible working, home working, and basic annual leave entitlement of 33 days, mobile phone provision, career break opportunities and career average pension scheme, plus many other staff benefits.
