Deputy Director: Regeneration and Assets

Up to £110k

Recently named the second-fastest growing city in the UK, and already a regional powerhouse, Reading’s forward momentum is remarkable. High employment levels, a well-qualified local population, and an established and respected university all contribute to Reading’s appeal to inward investors. The Council is playing a central role in creating the right environment for growth and ensuring that benefits are reinvested to support financial sustainability and effectively dispersed to address inequality.

Team Reading is central to this making this happen – assembling a new management team across a range of services, to create consistently high expectations, shared corporate accountability and an unswerving focus on high quality services. We have already delivered £26m of savings, stabilised our revenue budget and have a £0.5bn capital programme to invest in Reading’s future. We’re redefining how the Council delivers, influences and brokers on behalf of our community. For those who want to be at the vanguard of modern local government: Reading is where it’s happening.

This is a new role within the organisation and there is a distinct emphasis on delivery – turning good ideas and intentions into action on the ground. You’ll play an influential role in accelerating economic development, physical regeneration of the town centre and facilitating housing growth. You can expect to be play a central role in high profile projects to support and evolve our retail offering, deliver the maximum return from council assets and ensure that the town derives the maximum economic benefit from the enhanced connectivity that Crossrail will bring. The Council is making considerable investment into property and you’ll help to develop our asset management capabilities to ensure that this investment is managed effectively and delivers a sustainable return to support a confident, self-sufficient local economy.

Your track record should include compelling experience of some, if not all of these areas, and it’s essential that you can lead complex projects through influence as well as direct line management to maintain momentum across different delivery mechanisms. Effective relationships and partnerships across the town and beyond will be key in consolidating the Reading offer to deliver ‘spade-ready’ schemes and secure the funding to make things happen.
