An extraordinary place to practise planning

Published on: 16 Jan 2020

Greater Cambridge Share Planning

Cambridge has a remarkable city centre with iconic structures like King’s College and a history of world-renowned thinking. It is also home to 125,000 residents and 5,500 businesses including AstraZeneca’s £500 million investment on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, currently in build.

Surrounding the city centre, South Cambridgeshire has 103 picturesque villages and new towns, alongside booming science and tech clusters.

Cambridge City Council and South Cambridgeshire District Council have a shared planning service – Greater Cambridge Shared Planning. Growth across Greater Cambridge addresses the pressing housing need, with small developments in existing villages and major new developments including new towns at Northstowe (the largest since Milton Keynes) and Waterbeach (9,000 homes).

Fantastic employment opportunities mean people who grew up here want to stay, those commuting want to move closer, and others want to relocate. Working with local communities, we enable development that sensitively balances these demands in a way that works for everyone.

Our partners are some of the fi nest architects and companies in the world. Our projects are some of the most rewarding, from healthy new towns to co-housing developments, and cutting-edge biotech facilities to strategic infrastructure projects, such as new rail stations, strategic road developments and a proposed metro system, improving the lives of all our residents.

Our places are certainly some of the most beautiful and historic in the world, and we balance development that allows people and the local economy to thrive alongside our commitment to enhancing the environment and addressing climate change.
