About the Role

Surrey faces huge challenges to accommodate housing and economic growth in a sustainable way in the context of a densely populated and valuable natural environment. Surrey is a diverse County with urban fringe in the north abutting Greater London and free standing towns and villages to the south. 73% of the County is within the Metropolitan Greenbelt, 26% within one of the two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and 22% covered in Woodland. Development proposals in Surrey are often controversial and can generate significant public interest. Many Surrey residents are deeply concerned about development and actively participate in the planning process.
The County Council is the Planning Authority for minerals, waste and the County Council’s own development proposals. The County Council is currently looking to recruit Senior Planners to the Spatial Planning & Policy and Planning Development teams. We are looking for experienced planners looking to progress their careers.
Excellent communication skills are crucial to these posts. The post holders will be expected to be able to politely and confidently communicate verbally and in writing with the public, fellow professionals, applicants and County Councillors. Good organisation, self-motivation, enthusiasm and attention to detail are important personal skills in these roles.
The Spatial Planning & Policy Team
The Spatial Planning & Policy Team are responsible for co-ordinating the County Council’s statutory duty to co-operate obligations throughout the Authority.
The post holder in Spatial Planning & Policy will be working with the District and Borough Councils in the County in local plan preparation; responding to consultations on local plans; liaising with neighbouring authorities; co-ordinating County Council consultation responses across services; and maximising funding for infrastructure delivery to support economic growth.
The Planning Development Team
The Planning Development team are responsible for the County Council’s statutory development management role The post holder in Planning Development will predominantly deal with the processing of applications for the County Council’s own ‘Regulation 3’ development, although they will also be expected to assist with minerals and waste development casework. The post holder will be able to deal with complex applications with minimal supervision. They will also be expected to assist and mentor more junior officers. Case Officers at all levels are expected produce reports and to present their own applications at Committee.
To be shortlisted for interview, your application will need to clearly show evidence of:
- A relevant degree;
- A full UK driving licence;
- Chartered membership of the RTPI or a demonstration of commitment to working towards;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
- An in depth understanding of the planning system gained through a minimum of 4 years work;
- A commitment to delivering sustainable development for the benefit of the residents of Surrey.
