Chiltern and South Bucks District Councils have recently completed a review to combine their planning teams into a brand new Joint Planning Service based in central Amersham. We are 70+ staff strong across five departments – Planning Policy, Building Control, Development Management, Enforcement and Planning Support. We are a progressive service covering two Councils and we are currently involved in a range of very exciting projects, and we would like you to be a part of it.

As an employer we pride ourselves on offering a fantastic, family friendly place to work. We promote flexible working with many opportunities for learning and development, along with an attractive benefits package visible on our website which includes free car parking and reductions at our leisure centres.

We have strong leadership, direction and support from our Elected Members, and Corporate Management to build an Exemplar Planning Service. As a result we’re being appropriately resourced to successfully deliver that vision. We have big plans to modernise the way in which the service is delivered, so we continue to provide our communities in Chiltern and South Bucks with a wide range of high quality housing, (including a good supply of affordable homes), employment opportunities, and high quality environments to help meet community needs, whilst also protecting the spectacular environment which includes the Chiltern AONB and Metropolitan Green Belt.

Being on the fringes of London (Amersham is literally at the end of the Metropolitan Tube Line), intersected by major transport routes (M25, M40 and the M4) there are substantial development pressures. The proposed HS2 route cuts through the heart of the Chiltern District, whilst the proposed Heathrow runway expansion borders the Southern boundary of South Bucks with significant resultant pressures. So far as projects within the Town Planning field go, we are experiencing challenges that will make working with us exciting for many years to come.

Both Councils perform in the top quartile of national performance in terms of the delivery of the planning service, and we’re keen to maintain that record.

Despite the proud achievements set out above, we know we aren’t perfect and there are many areas we can do better. We are looking for enthusiastic and dynamic individuals to come and work alongside and complement our ambitious team as we strive to continue to improve. If you’re not prepared to settle for the status quo, or are frustrated by lack of change in your current role, we think you might fit in well in our team.

We’re preparing to go to consultation on our Joint Local Plan very soon, and there are a number of significant and ambitious projects underway with the goal of delivering an Exemplar Planning Service, that you could have the opportunity to get involved with.

Having a can-do attitude is a must, alongside a wish to be part of an ambitious, changing, agile, and family friendly organisation that genuinely wants to provide the best service to our customers.

We will consider apprenticeship/graduate applications interested in starting a career in Planning.
