Head of Development Management
Islington is one of the most economically dynamic and successful parts of London. It is also a place where some of London’s richest and poorest people live next door to one another. The council is committed to tackling inequality in the borough. It will do this by delivering high levels of genuinely affordable housing, and by ensuring that local people are able to access new jobs and the wider benefits of economic growth.
The council’s Planning and Development Service is central to the achievement of these twin priorities. Ambitious and innovative planning policies have been adopted to deliver these priorities - often attracting national attention. We are looking for a new Head of Development Management who is able to work with developers, our partners and the local community to implement our planning priorities - delivering genuinely affordable homes and an inclusive economy.
You will take the lead on major development sites including Holloway Prison, Moorfields Eye Hospital and Archway Campus. You must have a strong track record of leading negotiations on complex major planning applications. In addition to leading on major sites, you must also be able to demonstrate a commitment to leading continuous service improvement – ensuring that we deliver an excellent development management service to all our service users.
There are significant challenges around developing in London’s most densely developed borough. You will need to ensure that growth can take place whilst protecting the borough’s unique character and local peoples’ quality of life. We are therefore looking for someone who is passionate about ensuring that all new developments are designed and delivered to the highest possible architectural standards.
You will also have experience of managing teams within a development management environment, and a track record of delivering development within a complex urban environment. You must be capable of working constructively with elected Members, working under pressure, and be able to demonstrate resilient and inspirational leadership. Above all, the role offers an opportunity to make a real difference in one of London’s most dynamic and diverse boroughs.
This post offers a positive and friendly working environment with dedicated and enthusiastic staff, flexible working hours, generous annual leave and a pension scheme.
