Senior Planning Policy Officer

Mendip is a small and friendly Council based in Shepton Mallet, Somerset near to Bath and Bristol. It covers areas of outstanding countryside including the Mendip Hills AONB, historic centres such as Glastonbury and Wells and distinctive villages. The Council has an ambitious approach to growth and a strong commitment to improve the wellbeing of its communities.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and self-motivated senior planner to join the planning policy team. You will be working on a wide range of strategies and policies to develop the next district development plan as well as neighbourhood plans, development briefs and guidance. Reporting to the Principal Planning Officer, the post offers the opportunity to work closely with colleagues in development, management, economic development and affordable housing in making our policies work in practice.

You must have demonstrable experience of development plan processes and the preparation of Local Plan evidence base. The role also requires a good knowledge of planning principles, research methods, data mapping and analysis of social, economic and environmental data. You will have strong communication and presentation skills in a range of formal and informal settings, including experience at Inquiries and examination hearings

Applicants should have a degree in planning or related discipline. You should have proven experience to qualify for RTPI membership, be a Member of the RTPI or other relevant professional body.

You will be based at the Council Offices in Shepton Mallet which includes remote working usually 2 days per week.
