We are looking for both a Senior Planner and Planner with a bit of spark and drive, keen to work client side in the renewable energy industry as part of Lightsource BP’s in-house Planning Team. Working as part of an in-house team provides exposure to all aspect of a project's life cycle, from initial site selection, project development and project financing, through to asset management and ongoing operation of built assets.

The role will primarily involve leading on planning applications for utility scale solar farms across the UK. You will work closely with other internal teams, including development, project management, asset management and structured finance.  Core duties will include:

  • Planning constraints analysis to inform site selection for new solar farms (desktop and site visits)
  • Preparation and management of major planning applications (including preparation of planning documentation and management of consultant inputs), including leading on any appeals
  • Leading on stakeholder engagement for solar farm projects (organising community information events, and managing PR consultants)
  • Undertaking post-construction planning compliance assessments for operational solar farms
  • Undertaking due diligence assessments of acquisition targets
  • Mentoring junior staff and providing input into team strategy (Senior Planner)

Regular travel around the UK for site visits, community information events, and meeting with LPAs is likely. The role may also include supporting the other jurisdictions that Lightsource BP operates in globally, together with research into planning systems in new markets.

Candidate Requirements - Planner Role

  • Sound working knowledge of the UK Planning System
  • An understanding / appreciation of the key planning challenges that solar farms face
  • An interest in working in the renewable energy industry
  • 2 years minimum experience in the planning profession
  • Experience in managing planning applications 
  • Ideally experience with renewable energy projects or other infrastructure or rural development projects
  • Degree level planning qualification
  • MRTPI or working toward MRTPI
  • Full drivers licence
  • Fluent English
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

    • 5 years minimum experience in the planning profession
    • Experience in managing Major planning applications
    • Stakeholder engagement experience
