Job Details

Principal Urban Designer

About Us:

The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea has unmatched built heritage sitting alongside iconic retail centres, a vibrant specialist employment market, an international medical quarter and world class cultural attractions. We are home to wealthy areas, but also to some of the most deprived wards in London.

The Role:

You will be involved in major regeneration sites like Earls Court and Kensal Canalside, but in the country’s most densely developed Borough some of most complex and controversial applications are smaller proposals which can directly affect our residents’ lives.

The Council is a major landowner with impressive ambitions to provide more homes, jobs, public realm and facilities to make conservation areas of the future. Accompanying this we have a NPPF compliant Local Plan. You will play an active role in ensuring that we make sure we create the places, homes and local employment we need whilst protecting what makes the borough unique.

About You:

You will be passionate about place shaping as part of this process and be the lead officer for urban design. The ideal candidate will be an effective urban designer, with excellent written, visual and verbal communication skills and a pro-active approach to resolving complex issues, and you will be self-motivated and capable of delivering high quality. Your work is likely to be wide ranging including major planning applications, regeneration projects, site specific planning briefs and neighbourhood initiatives.

We are committed to promoting equality and respecting diversity and welcome applications from all sections of the community.

We are Disability Confident - committed to ensuring that our recruitment and selection process is inclusive and accessible.

We work in partnership with Hampshire County Council (HCC) who deliver many transactional services on our behalf. Although most communications will be from HCC, all selection and appointment decisions will be made by RBKC. Certain services are shared across more than one Council area to nearby neighbouring Authorities. This enhances delivery and reduces costs. Your recruitment information will advise if your remit extends beyond RBKC.
