Job Details

Thanet is a unique coastal environment with around 2,000 listed buildings, the highest number for any non-metropolitan local authority in the south-east of England and the highest density in Kent; and 27 conservation areas. Thanet District Council are committed to respecting the character and heritage of the district which is vital to ensuring the continued growth and rejuvenation of the area.

The role of Senior Conservation Officer at Thanet District Council plays a key role in advising and providing guidance on listed buildings and conservation areas relating to impacts and effects of new development, as well as on repair and maintenance issues. You would be working collaboratively with the planning applications team and individual planning officer to facilitate high quality development which preserve or enhances the diverse historic environment in the district. You would also be working with our Planning Enforcement team to assist in formal action, or resolution where possible, against unauthorised works affecting designated heritage assets. You will also be responsible for the production of conservation character appraisals and management plans and contribute to local planning policy and corporate projects, as the Council seeks to implement our Heritage Strategy, due to be published imminently.

We are looking for an enthusiastic Officer who is passionate about history, architecture and our heritage to complement our existing planning applications team. You will need to have a degree in Historic Building Conservation, Architectural Conservation, or a related discipline, and professional membership of IHBC, RIBA or RTPI. You should also be able to demonstrate experience of specialist work in the historic environment, ideally within a local authority and planning context.

This post requires you to have a full driving licence and own transport or requires travelling to sites in a timely manner equivalent to motor travel in your own car.

Due to the nature of the role, this is a politically restricted post.

For an informal discussion about the post please contact Iain Livingstone on 01843 577140 or at iain.livingstone@thanet.gov.uk or Emma Fibbens on 01843 577133 (until 12th March).
