We are pleased to announce that we have three exciting opportunities for Assistant Planning Advisers within the London and South East and East of England regions to join the Trust:

Two vacancies are available on a full time fixed term contract for two years based in London and South East, with flexible locations considered in Kent, Surrey, London, Hampshire or Buckinghamshire, offering a salary of up to £28,059. We will also consider these roles on a part-time basis. Interviews will take place for these particular roles on Thursday 25th April and Friday 26th April.

One vacancy is available on a part time (22.5 hours) fixed term contract for two years based in the East of England Region, specifically Bury St Edmunds, offering a pro rata salary of up to £16,835 (full time equivalent £28,059). Interviews will take place for this role on Tuesday 23rd April.

Here at the National Trust, we care for and provide access to more land and buildings in England, Wales and Northern Ireland than any other private landowner. Small wonder, then, that effective planning and land management is at the heart of everything we do. But our properties are under increasing pressure from competing land uses and we have an important role to play in promoting an integrated approach to sustainable development.

It’s a busy and exciting time to join our Planning Team as they are planning challenges facing our properties, from major external infrastructure and third-party development projects to the sensitive development of our own places to sustain their future. This is a great opportunity to work on varied projects in beautiful historic places and to expand your heritage and conservation knowledge and experience.

What it's like to work here

Our two London and South East roles can be based at any one of our Consultancy Hubs in the region, Wisley Hub in Surrey, Scotney Castle in Kent, Grosvenor Gardens in London, Micheldever Station near Winchester or Chilterns Hub in High Wycombe.

Our East of England role will be based out of our East of England Regional Hub located in Wesley Bottom, Bury St Edmunds. Westley Bottom is a beautiful traditional Suffolk barn with outbuildings which was converted to form the new Regional Office in 2004.

Working out of our Hubs as part of a mixed team of professionals, you will work across the regions at a range of properties, meeting a variety of teams throughout the week.

What you'll be doing

Under the guidance of our Planning Advisers you will be expected to assist on planning matters across much of the Region’s portfolio of properties. You will provide support and advice to properties, with a strong focus on heritage and conservation on everything from local planning to development management. You will be able to tackle a wide range of issues, from external proposals affecting listed buildings, protected landscapes and urban green spaces to assisting the National Trust with the planning aspects of conserving and developing the potential of our special places. You will monitor and assist with responding to Local Plans affecting the Region’s properties as well as any Neighbourhood Plans. Colleagues will look to you for in-depth, up-to-the-minute advice and guidance. Like everyone here, you’ll relish the challenge of helping more and more people to enjoy our magical places and spaces, and to safeguard them forever, for everyone.

Who we're looking for

  • A planner with an RTPI-accredited degree or working towards chartered RTPI membership through another recognised route.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the legislative background to planning and of local government.
  • Influencing, negotiating and communication skills, including external advocacy and networking with a range of audiences.
  • A passion for the built and natural environment and an interest in developing experience in the conservation and heritage sector
  • A clear client focus and the ability to work and effectively manage your time across several projects
  • A full UK driving licence is a necessity for this role as it will require regular travel within each Region (and occasionally further afield)
