About the London Borough of Tower Hamlets

Tower Hamlets is one of the most diverse boroughs within London delivering significant economic growth alongside a rapidly expanding population, in locations such as Canary Wharf, Poplar Riverside and the City Fringe. Alongside this, the borough benefits from the amazingly rich history of East London and an abundance of heritage assets such as the Tower of London, Island Gardens and Victoria Park.

Tower Hamlets will see the most significant increase in population and jobs in the country over the next two decades. In a borough that is growing and changing so quickly, a planned and coordinated approach to delivering the right type of housing, infrastructure and placemaking is vital. To this end, the Council has an ambitious affordable housing programme and are planning for more health facilities, increasing primary and secondary school places and improving green spaces, transport connections, community facilities and other elements of the borough’s infrastructure.

The Role

The Council is committed to maximising the benefits that come with new development, such as affordable housing and infrastructure enhancements. The economic viability of development has become an important consideration as part of the planning system, both in terms of plan-making and when determining planning applications. To ensure Tower Hamlets is best placed to address matters relating to development viability, the Council has implemented a dedicated team to provide viability advice to the Planning and Building Control Service.

This is an ideal opportunity for an enthusiastic individual wishing to further their career within the Planning/Surveying profession. By joining the existing Development Viability Team, your input will help shape the future of Tower Hamlets and will play a vital role in maximising the delivery of affordable housing in the Borough. Working in one of London’s most diverse Planning Department, you will engage in a variety of important, interesting development projects and programmes with your Colleagues, Managers and external viability expertise.

About You

We are passionate about what we do. We are committed to creating great places that make our communities proud to live in and that can be enjoyed, now and long into the future. To help us achieve this we are ideally looking for someone who will be able to demonstrate practical knowledge of Development Viability in a plan making or surveying environment who is keen to further develop their skillset within a supported team, diligently applying themselves whilst being thorough and critical, maintaining a professional & positive working ethos.
