Principal Planner (Development Control)

Up to £35,934 per annum

This is your chance to play a leading role in development control and planning enforcement at a Borough Council that appreciates the value and impact of planning - from major residential and commercial propositions through to householder, agricultural and other applications.

As a founding member of the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership, East Staffordshire Borough Council is positive about planning. We are excited by the opportunities that can be captured through managing change. You will be joining a council with a strong local plan, adopted in 2015. We’ve also made 15 neighbourhood plans. We have top quartile performance in the determination of over 900 planning applications last year. What’s more, we can boast an enviable housing land supply, in excess of 6 years.

Your remit will span the operational activities of a dedicated team of development control professionals. You’ll work closely with the Planning Manager, who will rely on your assistance in coordinating the team. As well as supervising the team’s work, you will personally provide expertise to the Council on a host of development control and planning enforcement matters. This will include preparing and presenting high quality reports to Committees and Members. Along the way, you will carry out a range of key duties including processing planning applications, pre-application activities, appeal casework, enforcement and monitoring.

Together with a recognised qualification allowing full membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute, you’ll bring to the role a proven track record in planning delivery. This will include dealing with the public, investigative work and providing evidence. Crucially, you have experience of formal interviewing and the use of regulatory powers relating to Section 106 matters in local government. A team player, you demonstrate good communication skills, exemplary time management and a flair for innovative thinking.

Please note that a full driving licence and access to your own vehicle are essential. You will benefit from a Car Necessity Scheme allowance.
