Selby Town High Street Heritage Action Zone Project Manager 

Salary Band – 3c - Annual Salary – £33,799 per annum

An exciting opportunity has arisen at Selby District Council for a full-time Project Manager to coordinate a series of physical, cultural and community-based projects which capture and celebrate the rich history of Selby Town. The 4-year High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) programme runs until March 2024 and is a jointly funded initiative with Historic England. The post will appeal to an individual with previous project management experience in a heritage and conservation environment who has a passion to explore the layers of our history in unique and interesting ways. We want to create an understanding of how we preserve, and use, a celebratory heritage approach in our future approach to planning design. The post will co-ordinate the full series of projects for the Selby Town High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) alongside the expertise of a wider multi-disciplinary team. The HAZ Project Manager will work closely with partners and stakeholders, including the local community, businesses, and owners.

Selby town itself is a place well connected at the heart of the Yorkshire region with hidden layers just waiting to be unearthed to tell the story of our place. It is an array of Medieval to 19/20th century buildings surrounding our stunning Grade One 11th Century Selby Abbey (birthplace of Henry I) with stories rooted in Norse/Roman times, through to recent famous shipping, mining and energy industries. Our local communities are proud of their history and eager to interact with their town centre in unique and meaningful ways.

The HSHAZ has been established to promote heritage-inspired growth to our high street and to connect our people’s stories to their place. It is part of a complementary framework of activity alongside other community and regeneration initiatives in the town designed to bring about lasting change.

Main Duties

The Project Manager will develop, co-ordinate and implement the programme set out in the HSHAZ Delivery Plan over the 4-year delivery period. They will raise awareness and understanding of the role of heritage supporting regeneration, and co-ordinate the successful delivery of a range of projects delivering tangible outputs. There will be substantial links to the current development of the Local Plan, providing a significant opportunity to create good practice in heritage and conservation policy for the future.

Based in the Council’s Planning Service, you will work closely with colleagues from across the Council and Historic England, as well as the wider HSHAZ partners. You will need an ability to operate strategically, identify links, work across a wide range of sectors, and deal with partners and stakeholders across all levels of responsibility. You will need excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to be particularly effective at building and strengthening partnerships, engaging and influencing the wider community, co- ordinating community based activities and events, promoting the HSHAZ initiative and the role of heritage in regeneration. You will report progress on a regular basis to the HSHAZ Partnership Steering Group as the heritage and economy element of a wider town’s action plan framework.

Applicants should be educated to degree standard or equivalent in an appropriate heritage conservation background with professional development experience of architectural, planning, urban design or project management disciplines desirable. The interview process will be managed by Selby District Council in partnership with Historic England.
