Transport Planning Opportunities
We are seeking to appoint enthusiastic Transport Planners at Principal and Senior level to undertake option identification and initial assessment of potential schemes across the UK. You should have a good understanding and experience of undertake option assessments and the appraisal of the economic, financial and environmental impacts of proposed schemes. You will be part of a team creating and developing options with subsequent traffic modelling and economic assessment of a number of potential solutions to a transport problem. The team will be carry out a variety of online and public events at which the public will be consulted and their views on the potential options taken into account. The resulting robust traffic assessment will identify if the scheme will work now and in the future, assess whether the proposed solution will mitigate an identified problem and whether there are any consequential impacts, for example on the environment, prior to confirming the preferred option.

In summary, proven skills in some or all of the following are sought:

  • Option identification to be taken to public consultation;
  • Assessment of options in terms of traffic forecasts, economic benefits and environmental impact;
  • Public consultation; and Analysis of comments received, refining of assessments and producing an outline business case for a preferred option.

The successful candidate will work as part of a Transportation Team, with the objective of successfully delivering a range of transportation planning projects to public sector clients. You will be involved in delivering all aspects of Highways England Scheme Stages 1 / 2 and WelTAG/WebTAG Stages 1, 2 and 3.

Role

  • To produce and review Option Assessment Reports and Business Cases;
  • To have a working knowledge of transport guidance and current best practice (Highways England / WelTAG / WebTAG);
  • To have a good understanding of transport project development processes;
  • To be able to think at both strategic and detailed levels;
  • To produce high quality project reports, including technical documents;
  • To have the ability to communicate technical arguments to technical and non-technical clients;
  • To present outputs from studies to a range of audiences; and
  • To develop relationships with Highway England / Local Authorities.

Person Specification

  • Understanding of the transport scheme appraisal process in the UK, including Highways England Scheme Stages 1 / 2 or WelTAG / WebTAG
  • Knowledge of economic analysis software e.g. TUBA
  • Ability to undertake Value of Money BCR assessments for proposed schemes
  • Experience of liaising and working with partners and agencies
  • Knowledge/experience over a range of civil engineering and transport disciplines such as: cycle and pedestrian network delivery, public transport networks and interchanges, highways and junctions
  • IT Literate, capable of using MS Word, Excel and other office packages
  • Able to communicate effectively with a wide range of audiences both verbally and in writing
  • Able to work accurately and with attention to detail
  • Able to work to deadlines and with competing priorities
  • Able to prioritise and organise own work with minimum supervision, working to deadlines and with competing priorities
  • Chartered or working towards chartered status.
