Mendip District Council is a rural authority located in Somerset and home to the famous Glastonbury Festival.  We are currently experiencing a time of exciting growth in terms of housing and economic developments which requires excellent skills in planning in order to balance these proposals against the sensitive landscapes and historic environment that we look after.  Current priorities are to continue to develop the services that Mendip provides whilst maintaining high planning performance regionally and nationally, whilst also delivering new jobs, homes and infrastructure.

We are therefore looking for Principal Planning Officer to support the Council’s delivery of the development management service through the effective handling of planning casework, providing pre-application advice to customers and to the Council.  We have recently undergone a service transformation and improvement project and part of your role will to ensure that these improvements are taken forward, developed and successfully delivered to our customers.

This is a senior role within the team so we are looking for an experienced, proactive and forward thinking individual with excellent negotiating skills who seek solutions to issues and who use their commercial awareness and know-how to deliver a high quality planning service.

You will be responsible for managing a diverse caseload of major applications including major housing, employment, retail and regeneration proposals with additional responsibilities to supervise, support and provide advice to other Planning Officers along with delegated authority to sign off decisions.  The Principal Planning Officer will also be expected to act as Lead Planning Officer at Planning Board.

Applicants must have a degree level qualification in Town and Country Planning/Spatial Planning or an appropriate subject relating to planning and be able to demonstrate post-qualification experience dealing with a range of planning applications, giving pre-application advice and representing the Council at appeal.  Chartered Membership, or eligibility for membership of the RTPI is necessary and applicants will need to demonstrate an extensive knowledge and understanding of technical matters relating of the overall planning process, policy, legislation, guidance and regulation and an awareness of the government planning reform agenda.

We offer a Relocation Allowance of up to £8,000 (subject to eligibility).
