Assistant Director Place Shaping and Planning

£81,495 per annum

Working from home with occasional visits to Tameside One, Market Place, Ashton-under-Lyne & Dukinfield Town Hall, King Street.

Tameside Borough Council is embarking on an ambitious programme of economic and housing growth. With the recent launch of our Inclusive Growth Strategy, emerging Housing Strategy, Housing Delivery Plan and Low Carbon Strategy, it’s an exciting time to join us. Our Inclusive Growth Strategy sets out our priorities for the borough, including the following major programmes:

  • Godley Green Garden Village
  • Ashton Innovation Zone and Growth Corridor, encompassing Ashton Moss Employment area and St Petersfield
  • Hattersley Regeneration
  • Wide-scale Town Centre regeneration plans for Ashton-under-Lyne, Stalybridge, Hyde and Droylsden.

We are looking for a highly accomplished, ambitious and determined Chartered Town Planner to join the Growth Directorate’s leadership team. You will provide effective leadership and operational management of Development Management, Planning Support, Local Plans, Transport Planning, Building Control and the GM Ecology Unit. You will have either extensive experience of Development Management and major applications or senior level Local Plan expertise. You will provide senior level input to the Greater Manchester ‘Places for Everyone’ Plan and progress our local plan from inception through to Examination in Public. You will be a project sponsor on regeneration and development programmes.

If you have a Development Management background, you will bring expertise and experience of major planning applications which facilitate large-scale regeneration and major development programmes, in support of economic and housing growth. You will champion high quality design and have an excellent track record of working in partnership with external bodies, local and national organisations and central government departments. You will provide supportive and motivational leadership, manage multi-disciplinary teams and have the ability to manage cross-directorate and corporate work programmes. A ‘can do’ attitude is essential, as is an appreciation of political sensitivities and a sound track record of delivering first class, high performing services in a political environment.

You will be the principal advisor to the Director of Growth, Elected Members and Tameside Council and Tameside and Glossop CCG Single Leadership Team on all Planning matters. You will work with a wide range of partners and stakeholders, including Greater Manchester Combined Authority, Transport for Greater Manchester and central government departments to get optimum results for Tameside.

With significant experience of motivating individuals and teams, you will be able to work at pace, with enthusiasm and drive and be able to engage with and influence a range of stakeholders at all levels.

If you would like to find out more, please contact Jayne Traverse, Director of Growth on 0161 342 3340.

Closing date: 4 June 2021.
