Planning Adviser

Salary £42,462 – £46,029

Any FC office, with regular presence in Bristol and travel nationwide, may be home based initially due to coronavirus restrictions.

Full time (37 hours per week), with job share considered.

Background to role:

Forest Services, as part of Forestry Commission, are the Government’s Forestry experts. We advise nationally and locally on how to unlock the full potential of woodlands and support the forestry sector to protect, improve and expand England’s valuable woodland assets, ensuring that they continue to provide benefits to people, the environment and the economy.

If you are passionate about both how trees and woodlands can create a better future for England, particularly through the planning system and opportunities through planning reform, and you want to play a key part in realising that, we want to hear from you.

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

Within Forest Services (FS), the multi-disciplinary Policy and Advice team (PAt) helps the Defra and other government departments to develop forestry and woodland policy that works. It does so by drawing on Forest Services’ wide-ranging forestry and woodlands experience, expertise, evidence and networks.

This role will focus on the interface of the planning sector and development with trees and woodland. It will help ensure that the benefits of trees and woodlands are recognised and utilised in a time of significant planning reform, helping the land management, planning and development sectors respond to net zero carbon and nature recovery policies. This is underpinned by the 25 Year Environment Plan, the Environment Bill, England Tree Action Plan, and future planning reform. The role will include engaging with developing work on net gain, environmental impact assessment and nature based solutions.

The post will operate in an interdisciplinary environment, working directly with policy, incentives and regulations leads, and Area delivery teams in Forest Services. You will also need to rapidly develop collaborative relationships with colleagues in Defra, MHCLG, Natural England, the Environment Agency, the Planning Inspectorate, local authorities, and wider government.

To enable the forestry sector to protect, improve, and expand England's woodland resource through:

  • providing specialist expertise to FC England, Ministers, and other public bodies on
  • managing the impact of planning decisions on woodlands and maximising the provision of ecosystem services through woodlands in the planning system.
  • driving and co-ordinating national scale projects focusing on the planning system, as part of the Cultural Services team within the Policy and Advice team.
