You will relish this opportunity to put the good of the environment at the heart of planning and development. Because everything’s better with nature. You included.

At Natural England, we advise the UK Government on the natural environment. We’re here to make sure people and nature can thrive. From collaborating on sustainable development and nature recovery, to shaping strategic plans for nature-rich places, to enabling more diverse people to connect with nature, we love what we do. Join us and you’ll be part of an inclusive, motivated and ambitious team, committed to achieving results for our environment, for everyone.

As Sustainable Development Lead Adviser, you will work with stakeholders and regulators to advise on local plans and projects. Our partners will rely on you to help them reach solutions which deliver sustainable growth and great outcomes for the environment. This varied role will see you advising on the development of environmental policy and best practice - from green infrastructure, to water and air quality. You’ll provide statutory advice to planning authorities and developers, and help them find innovative solutions to avoid environmental impact and maximise benefits to nature. With your help, developers can produce more sustainable planning proposals.

To join us, you will need a relevant degree or equivalent level of experience. With proven knowledge and experience of working within the marine or terrestrial statutory planning system, you understand exactly how nature is incorporated into planning. You’ll bring to the role demonstrable expertise in reviewing planning applications and environment assets. A highly skilled communicator, you have a flair for explaining your professional judgement, and for inspiring others to act in accordance with your expert, evidence-based solutions and advice.

We welcome and encourage applications from all communities and, wherever possible, we accommodate requests for both full and part-time hours and other flexible working patterns. Everyone at Natural England is supported to develop their skills and capabilities. You can also look forward to great benefits including a Civil Service pension.

If you’re inspired to protect and enhance England’s wildlife, and want to work for a leading science-led organisation, apply here.
