About us and the role we can offer:

Wiltshire is one of the largest planning authorities in England covering a large rural area including Salisbury plain and part of the New Forest, the City of Salisbury and many towns and villages of varying sizes. The planning team works alongside the communities in Wiltshire and many statutory stakeholders with the aim of delivering quality sustainable development . The role is required to preserve and enhance the extensive natural and built environment whilst working within the planning framework at national level, and in accordance with the adopted development plan which includes a large number of made neighbourhood plans.

The team is responsible for determining between 6000 – 8000 planning and associated applications each year across the three current area teams together with providing a pre-application service. We aim to  provide well designed developments throughout our towns, city and rural areas in timely manner. A large proportion of the area is covered by landscape designation/Conservation Areas and there are a large number of Listed Buildings. You will have an opportunity to deal with planning and listed building applications including major applications, appeals and pre-application enquiries primarily within one area team area including making recommendations as well as, at Senior Planning Officer level,  presenting to the Area and Strategic Planning Committees. You will also have a role in liaising with and assisting parish and town councils over the preparation of their neighbourhood plans. There will also be an opportunity to be involved in task-based projects and input into the emerging new Local Plan and other policy work.

About You:

You will have a recognised planning qualification (degree level) and be eligible for membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute (MRTPI) if applying for the Senior Planning role or have/be working towards having RTPI membership for the Planning Officer role. Alternatively you may have an equivalent recognised qualification in a relevant subject area with transferable skills.

You will have  knowledge of planning practice, procedures legislation, advice and policies for historic building and conservation practice and procedures. You will have good negotiation skills with the ability to undertake negotiations with developers to secure the best development possible along with contributions to community infrastructure. You will need excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as having the ability to work within a team to provide a high quality customer focused planning service and you will also work with colleagues across the organisation both within the wider planning service and other service areas such as legal and economic development. As a Senior Planning Officer you will also provide professional planning advice to Members and internal and external customers and will be required to use your presentation skills at Committee and as a Planning Officer you will gain experience in these areas with support from your team.
