Do you have a passion and vision to help shape future growth and planning in South Norfolk and Broadland District Councils?

Role Snapshot…

South Norfolk and Broadland Councils have an ambitious growth agenda with some significant projects to deliver including large scale residential schemes in Broadland’s Growth Triangle, key employment sites including enterprize zones, and an emerging local plan for Greater Norwich to deliver against.  Our One Planning Team for the two Council’s is key to delivering this agenda.  We have vacant Principal Planner roles that will play an integral part of the team’s success and performance and help shape and support more junior members of the team.

Your strong problem solving, negotiation and communication skills will enable you to effect positive outcomes on applications; working alongside applicants and stakeholders to deliver growth of the right quality in the right place whilst making sound and robust decisions in accordance with the regulatory framework.  You will be a role model and manager to others within the team to achieve quality decisions and manage performance.

What you could be part of…

The two Councils receive circa 4000 applications per year, covering a diverse area including both urban and rural areas, and vibrant market towns.  We serve approximately 260,000 residents and 10,000 businesses across 161 parishes.  Our work therefore also encompasses both urban and rural planning, residential, retail, commercial and agricultural development.

We are an ambitious organisation and a dynamic, forward thinking and proactive multi-disciplinary Development Management team; seeking to deliver against the growth agenda, shaping and creating sustainable communities and protecting and enhancing our rich cultural heritage and landscape.

Working as one team across two Councils you will be part of a busy development management team working on a wide range of planning applications, influencing and shaping future development proposals and contributing to delivering successful outcomes.

Working at the Council enables you to be part of an organisation which is proud to deliver high-quality, customer focussed services. Our success comes from us being commercially astute and business-like.  Continuous improvement is also vital and we challenge ourselves to develop new and innovative ways to improve the services that make a real difference to people’s lives.

What you’ll be doing…

Supporting your area manager in the overall management functions of the team including carrying out your own management responsibilities, providing professional support and advice to senior planning officers and planning officers in the area team.

Being proactive in negotiating and initiating action with applicants, stakeholders and Members on applications and pre-applications to actively resolve issues and problems for all types of complex and major development proposals.

Producing clear and concise reports and presenting these to Committee and other Council meetings and act as professional lead at public inquiries, hearings and other appeals etc.

Facilitating and encouraging the delivery of the growth of the district in accordance with Development Plan Policy and Council Policy and objectives.

You will…  be qualified to degree level in planning or a related discipline, be a chartered member of the RTPI or eligible and capable of gaining chartered membership within one year, have a full driving licence and significant and demonstrable post qualification experience of development management within a local authority or private practice.

What’s in it for you…
