The London Plan is an ambitious strategy for the future development of London, setting out how Good Growth will enable London to develop in a sustainable way.

The GLA Planning unit has two vacancies for senior strategic planners in the London Plan and Growth Strategies team.

Both roles will be appointed at Grade 8, with the opportunity to progress to Grade 9 in accordance with the career-grade scheme.

The first role works as part of the London Plan team, with responsibility for developing London Plan Guidance and new and updated evidence to support the implementation of the London Plan, as well as working on cross-cutting projects with partners across and outside the GLA. The team work in a project-driven way, with officers leading on specific projects across different policy areas. Upcoming project areas for the team include work on heritage and design, environmental policy, waste and recycling, social infrastructure, play and children’s independent mobility, and digital infrastructure. You may also advise on the development of Opportunity Area Planning Frameworks and conformity of Local Plans with the London Plan, and will contribute to service improvements across the department, including the implementation of our equalities, diversity and inclusion action plan.

The second, in the Growth Strategies and Urban Design team, works on the Local Plan Conformity and Monitoring function: responding to consultation on local development documents and drafting responses to local planning authorities, within and outside London, ensuring that the full range of Mayoral and functional bodies’ policy interests are taken into account and that comments are sound and fully reflect the Mayor’s policies. The post will also have a role in supporting the Mayor’s collaborative relationship with Government and partners in the wider south east on regional and sub-regional issues.

You will need to demonstrate experience and knowledge of planning policies at a suitable level. A successful track record in developing planning policy and guidance through research and collaboration, or similar experience, will also be important. You will also have detailed knowledge and understanding of national, regional, and London strategic planning issues, legal processes and policy trends.

You will have a degree in planning or a related discipline, or post-graduate qualification, with eligibility for RTPI membership, and good post-qualification experience in planning or a related team or department. You will also have a strong track record of giving professional advice on complex or sensitive issues. You will also be able to communicate effectively through clear and persuasive oral, written and personal presentations to a range of different audiences.

In their application, candidates should demonstrate how they meet the technical requirements for Grade 8 and the behavioural competencies set out in the Person Specification.
