Flexible/Hybrid working

Ashford Borough is a largely rural borough located in the Garden of England, with the large, growing, and prosperous town of Ashford as its focus for growth. We are an ambitious and innovative authority seeking new ways of improving how we deliver services for residents. We are, for example, one of a small number of ‘Local Plan Pathfinder’ authorities, working closely with MHCLG and others to take forward digital planning initiatives.

Ashford is a great place to work because our staff are committed, friendly and passionate. Ashford is also a great place to take your career forward. We seek out people with initiative, determination, a positive attitude and outlook, and a willingness to take on challenges and responsibility. We look for team players who are excited about and motivated to work on ground-breaking projects and initiatives with us.

We are delighted to also be able to offer this opportunity to join our Plan Making and Infrastructure team, which is responsible for the preparation of the Local Plan, infrastructure planning, Neighbourhood Plans, development monitoring and a wide range of special projects, working closely with other sections of the Spatial Planning Team, with responsibilities for place making and delivery of the South of Ashford Garden Community.

You will be expected to grow and develop your skills, and address new challenges positively and constructively, working alongside the Team Leaders and Deputy Team Leaders who will provide you with the right tools and confidence to take your career forward. This is a career-graded post which will enable you to gain an excellent grasp of the challenges of dealing with major developments.

You will be required to develop planning policies and guidance relevant to local needs for eventual inclusion in Development Plans, Supplementary Planning Documents or other informal policy guidance (including development briefs). Amongst other tasks, you will also:

  • Be responsible for the collection and monitoring of planning and development related information and opinion from a wide variety of sources and, where appropriate, for analysis and interpretation of that information.
  • Prepare written evidence for local inquiries or public examinations, to defend proposed or adopted policies in the Local Plan and, on occasion, present the council’s case with support from a senior officer.
  • Provide policy advice in pre-application discussions, and assistance on important planning applications.

In order to be competent in this role you will have experience of working to deadlines as this is a fast paced environment, and you will have the ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing, as well as being able to provide a customer focused service delivery.

If you don’t already have a planning qualification, you will also be willing to undertake a postgraduate or other programme of training leading to a recognised planning qualification
