Principal Policy Officer (Transport)

£54,898 per annum

Fixed term or secondment until May 2024

The Mayor. The London Assembly. The Greater London Authority. Together we form the capital’s strategic regional government. Joining us means coming to the very heart of change, shaping policy and practice to keep this city as one of the most exciting on the planet. If you like London, you’ll love working with us.

Transport has the potential to transform our city. It’s part of everyone’s daily lives and enables people to make the most of opportunities in London. London’s streets make up a lot of the city’s public space while transport is key to unlocking development across the capital.

With his Transport Strategy to guide the way, the Mayor is working hard with Transport for London to make transport better for everyone and to transform the city’s streets. In a challenging post-pandemic context, you’ll help to translate this vision into practical changes on London’s streets and public transport network. This is a world-leading strategy with stretching ambitions for physical activity, decarbonising the transport system and investment in new projects, which you’ll help to realise.

In this role you will be responsible for gaining buy-in to the Mayor’s priorities and ensuring progress against key commitments, so you will be comfortable working with and influencing senior colleagues. You’ll understand London’s political environment and how it plays out in practice, including managing complex stakeholder relationships. You will need experience of preparing clear and concise written reports and briefings for a range of audiences. In particular, you will be confident in identifying what senior leaders need to know and when, including proactively problem solving and making positive suggestions for change as required.Experience in transport or planning is not essential for this role.

The Mayor has announced that City Hall will be relocating from More London (London Bridge) to the Crystal Building in the Royal Docks. This role will be based with the Good Growth Directorate at London Fire Brigade’s Head Office (Union Street SE1 0LL). Further information on the relocation announcement can be found here.

At present GLA staff are working largely from home. Over the coming weeks and months, we will be moving to hybrid working, linked to our relocation programme. As part of this, you will need to split your time between home working and coming into the office.

We would welcome applications from candidates who are seeking part time work as this role is open to job share. In addition to a good salary package, we offer an attractive range of benefits including 30 days’ annual leave, interest free season ticket loan, interest free bicycle loan and a career average pension scheme.

If you have a question about the role, please contact Catherine.Seaborn@london.gov.uk or the recruitment process then please contact a member of the recruitment team via email on glarecruitment@engageats.co.uk quoting reference GLA2462.
