Summary

At the National Trust we care for places of historic interest and natural beauty for everyone, for ever. We are looking for an experienced planning professional to contribute to our ongoing work in Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Berkshire and West Sussex.

You will play a key role in tackling the planning challenges facing our properties – from influencing major external infrastructure and third-party development projects to the sensitive development of our own places to sustain their future.

£41,000-£45,000 (£24,600-£27,000 pro rata) depending on skills and experience

This is a part time role, based at our Micheldever Hub near Winchester.  We can be flexible about which days are worked and are happy to explore and agree a working arrangement which strikes the right balance for both you and the Trust. This role is partly office based (with the option to work from home when appropriate) but also requires you to visit the properties in your portfolio in order to directly support our General Managers and their teams.

What it's like to work here

We look after, and provide access for the public to more land and buildings in England, Wales and Northern Ireland than any other private landowner, so effective planning and sustainable management is at the heart of everything we do.

What you'll be doing

Our special places are also facing huge pressure from external development in London and South East. Using your specialist planning knowledge, you will help us to improve our own infrastructure and visitor experience, adapt to climate change and operate our properties in a more sustainable way to manage challenges, mitigate impacts and seize the opportunities!

Who we're looking for

We're looking for someone who is able to bring the following attributes to the role:

  • A Chartered Town Planner (or with eligibility for full membership of the RTPI).
  • Practical knowledge and experience of urban and rural planning, major infrastructure, transport planning, environmental issues, landscape, conservation and sustainable development.
  • You’ll have an up-to-date understanding of what’s happening in the wider world of land use and planning (including relevant legislation).
  • A flexible, agile working style with an analytical and methodical approach.
  • Confidence in interpreting data and using your findings to influence colleagues and support them in the decision-making process.
  • Able to proactively manage a challenging workload, by effectively prioritising, building a network of key contacts and through having the autonomy to decide where your time is best placed.

The package

The National Trust has the motto ‘For everyone, for ever’ at its heart. We’re working hard to create an inclusive culture, where everyone feels they belong. It’s important that our people reflect and represent the diversity of the communities and audiences we serve. We welcome and value difference, so when we say we’re for everyone, we want everyone to be welcome in our teams too.

Wherever you’re from, and whatever your background, we want to hear from you – and it doesn’t matter if you’re jam first, cream first, or even if you don’t like scones at all. Everyone is welcome.

Benefits for working at the National Trust include:

  • Flexible working whenever possible
  • Free parking at most locations
  • Free entry to our properties for you, a guest and your children (under 18)
  • Substantial pension scheme of up to 10% basic salary
