Planner/Senior Planner – Strategic Planning

Salary: £33,782-£37,890 (Grade 9)

Location: Remote working

 Summary:

An exciting job opportunity has arisen within Swansea Council’s ambitious and high performing Planning Authority, where the successful candidate will work alongside teams working at the vanguard of strategic planning and placemaking in Wales.

Swansea sits at the heart of Wales’ South West region and boasts an outstanding quality of life for residents and visitors. Future Wales: The National Plan identifies the area as one for significant growth over the next 20 years, and the Council’s adopted Local Development Plan (LDP) sets out an ambitious placemaking framework to deliver that growth. The successful candidate will get the chance to work on a wide range of exciting development projects coming forward across the city, including: large scale neighbourhood extensions on greenfield and brownfield sites; mixed use commercial-led city centre development; green infrastructure led public realm projects; and the Council’s own home building programme that aims to deliver a thousand homes over the coming decade. They will also play a key role in producing the next generation of planning frameworks to guide development across Swansea, including the replacement LDP and new Strategic Development Plan.

We are looking for a candidate that has the drive, passion and capabilities to take up the role, and build on Swansea’s excellent record of performance and our status as being at the forefront of Wales’s placemaking and forward planning agenda.

You will be given the necessary management and support to enable you to successfully undertake your role and develop professionally.

Details and key responsibilities:

Key duties for the postholder include:

  •  Work positively with developers, including the housing sector, to facilitate the delivery of appropriate, sustainable development schemes
  • Produce new and updated planning frameworks, including preparing development plan policies and supporting planning guidance
  • Undertake assessments and appraisals of development proposals using relevant software where necessary
  • Work as part of project teams comprising personnel from across Council departments, plus any relevant external stakeholders, with the aim of facilitating the delivery of appropriate development
  • Monitor and evaluate the delivery of planning projects, to ensure that the natural and built environment in Swansea is enhanced
  • Advise Council Members, applicants, agents, the general public, and any other interested parties, on relevant aspects of the planning process

Other Information:

Candidates must be a member, or working towards membership, of the Royal Town Planning Institute or equivalent professional body, and have experience in a planning environment within public or private sectors.

Unless otherwise advised, all interviews will be held virtually on Microsoft Teams.
