Senior Planning Policy Officer Directorate / Service

Commercial Development & Economic Growth / Planning Services

Salary - Grade 10 - £33,782 to £35,745 per annum

Contract Permanent - Hours 37 hours per week

We are looking for an experienced Planning Officer with knowledge of policy and a positive and proactive nature to fulfil a key role at Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council.

It’s an exciting time to join us as we are producing the new Local Plan. We have recruited three new staff this year and this is the final post to complete the team. There is an opportunity to work with your strengths and interests in policy to develop this role. We’re ideally looking for someone with a policy background, but would also welcome those with wider experience to apply.

This role is an opportunity to be involved in a varied workload covering both urban and rural spatial planning, working in a tight knit team to deliver the Local Plan and support our growing number of Neighbourhood Plans. You will be involved in shaping the towns of Newcastle-under-Lyme and Kidsgrove which have ambitious plans for growth and regeneration with Town Deal funding. In addition you will have responsibility for a number of topic areas.

We are in a very attractive and affordable part of the West Midlands equidistant from Manchester in the North and Birmingham in the South with the Peak District and the Shropshire Hills on our doorstep. The Council supports working from home and flexible working as well as working collaboratively in our new and modern office space located in the heart of Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Are you interested in;

  • playing a key role in delivering an ambitious development plan programme?
  • tackling challenges at a strategic level including balancing housing needs and constraints such as Green Belt and development viability?
  • working in a team, where you will have the opportunity to work on a range of topic areas?
  • having a diverse workload which will develop your knowledge and experience as a planning officer?
  • working for an authority committed to your training and development?

If this appeals to you and you are looking to take the next step in your career as well as being eager to play a key role in influencing the exciting changes ahead in the Borough and North Staffordshire, perhaps you’d like to come and work for us.

Appointment to the post will be subject to assessment against the requirements of the person specification, through consideration of the application and at interview.

For an informal conversation contact Jemma March (Planning Policy Manager) 01782 742477.

Closing date - 5pm on Monday 20 December 2021.

Should we receive a large number of applications, then this post could close sooner than the date stated.

Interview date - Week commencing 10 January 2022.
