In recognition of the strategic position that Bedford holds in the Oxford-Cambridge Arc and the linkages that will be created by East-West Rail connections, this is an exciting time to join the authority as a principal planner to handle complex major applications across residential and commercial remits, including negotiating on viability and s106 agreements with applicants. Candidates will be expected to provide professional advice and information on Development Management issues to a high level of competence (including the preparation and presentation of committee reports and giving oral presentations as required) to Members, Parish Councils, other internal services, other local authorities, Central Government, members of the public and other community stakeholders. Candidates will also be expected to contribute to the development of improvements to the practices and procedures of the service area and where required act as an expert witness in planning inquiries.
Part of the role also comprises deputising for the team leader when the team leader is absent by taking an active role in assisting the rest of the team and signing off the work of the rest of the team. This requires excellent time management and organisational skills to manage multiple tasks.
It is expected that candidates will have at least substantial experience in a development management function (although planning consultancy experience in DM focused work will be considered) and be MRTPI or are eligible to apply for RTPI chartership immediately.
