The Greater London Authority is London’s regional government and we support the Mayor of London in delivering their programmes and priorities. Planning is one of the Mayor’s few statutory powers and this area of work is high profile and challenging – in a good way! Your work will impact on our city and help to ensure that its development is sustainable. It will also impact on the lives of Londoners, and we want a candidate who is committed to an inclusive approach and reaching out to communities and partners.

The Mayor has set out his vision for the future of London in the London Plan, and now we have the challenge of delivering it and supporting London’s recovery and future planning. This role leads on strategic planning and leads of team of c25 staff, covering a broad range of policy areas. You will work closely with the Deputy Mayor for Planning, Regeneration and Skills, and with all policy areas of the GLA as well as with boroughs and also national Government.

As a Head of Service, you will be responsible for leading a high-performing and expert team. The staff of the unit are drawn from backgrounds across Planning and the Built Environment and demonstrate a passion for their work that cannot be matched.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background at a senior level in planning as well as strong skills in policy development and programme delivery. You will oversee an ambitious portfolio, working closely with the Deputy Mayor to translate key priorities into practical and achievable plans, policies and guidance. You will need to be an effective communicator, credible with stakeholders at every level across the sector.

As an experienced leader, you will have the ability to inspire, motivate and develop multi-disciplinary teams and will have a demonstrable commitment to, and achievement in, promoting diversity, equality and inclusion.

This job is ‘politically restricted’ under the Local Government and Housing Act 1989.

This role is based at the London Fire Brigade’s Head Office (Union Street SE1 0LL). At present GLA staff are working largely from home, with office space available at our offices.  Over the coming weeks and months, we will moving to hybrid working, linked to our relocation programme. As part of this, you will need to split your time between home working and coming into the office.
