RSPB Scotland is the country's largest nature conservation organisation and is active at all levels of the planning system, from developing and lobbying for new laws and national policies to engaging with hundreds of planning applications each year.

We are looking for someone to lead our planning work, managing our small team of professional planners, providing advice to the network of RSPB staff across Scotland, leading on our engagement in major proposals and working right at the heart of Scotland's planning system, working with officials, Ministers and other senior planning system decision makers and influencers to ensure that planning policy and decisions in Scotland help tackle the nature and climate emergency.

The role sits within RSPB Scotland’s Conservation Policy team, working closely with marine, land use, forestry, parliamentary and campaign colleagues to ensure that our planning work is integrated with other aspects of our land and seas work.

You will be an experienced chartered planner (MRTPI) or other comparably qualified and experienced land use professional with leadership experience who has a passion both for the development of policy and for influencing the highest profile development proposals to benefit nature and climate.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to perform these essential skills/capabilities:

  • Be able to display a comprehensive knowledge of Scotland’s planning system
  • Advocate effectively for Scotland’s planning system, and other related regulatory systems to deliver towards RSPB nature restoration objectives
  • Develop collaborative external and internal relationships with key stakeholders, ensuring that the RSPB is well represented, and corporate aims are delivered
  • Be accountable for the provision of their team’s expertise to internal and/or external audiences monitoring external developments and identifying risks and opportunities to inform and add value to the RSPB’s strategy and delivery.
  • Develop, monitor and manage team programmes.
  • Ensure the work of their team is aligned with wider RSPB objectives and procedures, in order to manage risk and dependencies and maximise effectiveness and impact across the whole of UK.
  • Contribute to preparing papers and reports for the RSPB's governance and oversee timely reporting of metrics in order to monitor progress.
  • Develop the skills and capabilities of their team (and self) towards high performance, celebrating successes and promoting the RSPB’s values and positive culture at all times.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Chartered planner (MRTPI) or other comparably qualified and experienced land use professional

The role can be based anywhere but regular travel to Edinburgh will be required.

Occasional travel elsewhere in Scotland and the rest of the UK will be required, including occasional overnight stays. Occasional extended periods of working away from home may be required to service public enquiries.

This is a Permanent Full Time role for 37.5 hours per week.

Closing date: 23:59, Mon, 14th Mar 2022.
We are looking to conduct interviews for this position at the end of March 2022.
