Senior Town Planner

Engena has an opportunity for an MRTPI qualified town planner with more than ten years project management experience to join their successful team of renewable energy experts.

We are a small company focussing on supporting the development of renewable energy projects across the UK and across technologies from on-shore wind to solar, battery and ev charging stations. With over a Gigawatt of experience we have successfully encountered a fascinating range of challenges over the years and seek a lateral-thinking, solutions driven individual who can help develop and grow the company’s existing portfolio of projects and clients as well as providing a lead on planning matters.

The role

Through a collaborative team approach we each contribute to the success of all of our clients’ projects and we are looking for someone who thrives in this supportive environment. Project management skills are pivotal as you will be the key point of contact for your clients with responsibility for progression of the projects from green-field to planning permission and planning conditions discharge. We on occasion support the legal team taking projects through the inquiry process and there is potential opportunity to manage this process should projects follow this determination route.

Our focus is very much on renewable energy projects, through our client base we have, however, supported residential, commercial and leisure projects. This is an area we are keen to develop and bring our skills to utilise the green agenda to promote wider development opportunities. We would be expecting you to develop workstreams as well as service existing workstreams. Energy experience is therefore beneficial but in no way critical to the role.

The way we work

Adding value is core to our approach and we foster a proactive collaborative way of working with officers and specialist consultants. We pride ourselves on the quality of our applications, underpinning this is our application documentation which is set out and written from the outset to support the determining officer – ensuring the information provided with the application is proportionate but adequately detailed to enable determination from the outset, and appeal-ready.

We are fortunate to have a very pleasant office base in the Suffolk countryside as well as access to shared-workspace in Edinburgh, but have embraced hybrid-working. We continue to principally home work and welcome remote working but would expect a minimum of monthly visits to the office near Needham Market.

A typical day

With the exciting breadth of projects we work on, there is rarely a typical day and a degree of mental agility and adaptability is an everyday requirement.

We engage the services of a fleet of trusted specialist consultants and management of the project team is a large proportion of the work, balanced with working closely with the client to ensure they have a full picture of project progress, risks, challenges and development solutions.

Where a project requires a planning statement, you would be given the space and time to complete the document. As senior planner we would turn to you for the planning statements for each project submission.

Other typical work would include:

  • managing teams of multidiscipline specialists delivering planning projects;
  • drafting of planning applications with team support;
  • preparing planning statements;
  • site visits, consultee and client meetings;
  • delivery to agreed timescales budgets;
  • support of and collaboration with colleagues;
  • liaison with clients and statutory bodies; and
  • contribution to business development.

A less typical day

Other ways we support our clients include less than usual daily activities.

We may run or support public consultation events, meet statutory consultees to address specific matters or contribute to Government or local plan consultations. The majority of work is desk based but we do visit each site at least once so the ability to travel is expected.

We really enjoy what we do and why we do it and hope that you share our passion for seeing projects succeed. If this opportunity interests you – we would love to hear from you.

Package includes company EV for personal and business use.

Closing date for expressions of interest 30th April 2022.
