We are looking for a highly motivated team member to join our Development Management team within the Planning & Building Control Service area. This opportunity has arisen as part of a Service Transformation Plan that will strengthen the teams to help deliver an excellent service to our customers.  

Walsall is a regional town with a rich history and a bright future with potential to deliver significant development and investment projects and is working in collaboration with the West Midlands Combined Authority and other public partners to deliver regeneration projects. Walsall Council has been awarded £11.4m from central government for the Future High Street Fund Programme to help deliver a Connected Gateway project to enable the delivery of two of the Town Centre Masterplan interventions; Transforming the Rail Station and Connected Hubs and Walsall and Bloxwich town areas stand to benefit from £21.3m each of Town Deal funding through the governments Towns Fund programme to deliver urban regeneration, green transport and economic growth outcomes.

The adopted Site Allocation Document, Walsall Town Centre Area Action Plan and the emerging Draft Black Country Plan seeks to deliver growth and regeneration through delivery of new housing, employment and infrastructure.

Dealing with a varied caseload of planning and enforcement work you must be able to demonstrate significant development management enforcement experience and have excellent communication and customer service skills. The role includes providing advice in respect of planning and enforcement law, policy and guidance to customers, including Members and other staff, and to follow statutory procedures and local practice to achieve corporate objectives.

You will have the skills to work effectively under pressure to observe deadlines and work independently and as part of a team to critically appraise and recommend decisions on formal applications and enforcement cases and present those recommendations to planning committee where required. You will also be required to prepare and present the Council’s case at relevant appeal procedures including public inquiries.  Negotiation and organisational skills are key to this role and you will also need to demonstrate excellent IT skills especially the use of MS Office.

You will need to be a qualified Town Planner and have a full driving license and access to a vehicle for carrying out site visits. You will be also be expected to meet the Government’s Code of Practice on the English Language Fluency Duty. The post is politically restricted.
