Senior Planning Officer
Bainbridge, Leyburn

The Yorkshire Dales National Park boasts some of the most stunning scenery in Britain and will provide an enviable setting for your career. As the planning authority for the area, it’s our job to help local people and businesses to keep the National Park a thriving and beautiful area.

Due to a member of our team leaving, there’s an opportunity to join our Development Management Team at an exciting time for the National Park.

About Us

We are the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, an organisation that protects, enhances and promotes the immense beauty, wildlife and character of the Yorkshire Dales. Set against expansive heather moorland tops, each valley has its own distinct charm, from crags and waterfalls to an underground labyrinth of caves.

This is an opportunity to apply for a much sought-after role in one of the most beautiful parts of the country. The role is full-time (37 hours), permanent and based at our Bainbridge office near Leyburn, with the potential for some regular home working.

This opportunity might be your chance to re-focus your career or to build upon your experience to achieve something you will be proud of, whilst working in one of the UK’s most striking and breath-taking locations.

The Role

You will have the chance to help local people and businesses to protect the National Park and ensure it remains a thriving and beautiful area for years to come.

As a Senior Planning Officer, you will work in a small team of planners responsible for delivering an efficient and effective development management service for the northern half of the National Park. The area comprises the visually stunning Swaledale, Wensleydale and Westmorland Dales, including iconic places like Hawes and Sedbergh.

Responsible for conserving the special qualities of these outstanding places, whilst delivering the housing and economic development necessary to sustain thriving communities. You will negotiate positive design solutions, provide professional advice on a broad spectrum of planning issues, manage applications efficiently and present your recommendations clearly.

Reporting to the Principal Planning Officer, you will:

  • Take on an interesting caseload
  • Handle applications and appeals in line with our procedures and practices
  • Help to monitor sites and the delivery of the enforcement service
  • Give evidence at public inquiries and hearings

About You

You will already have experience of development control work and a good understanding of the legislative, procedural and policy framework within which the planning system operates and the requirements for negotiating S.106 agreements.

You will be a Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) or be working towards becoming a Member.

Access to a car or access to a means of mobility support to meet the travel demands of the post (if driving, you must have a current valid driving licence and appropriate insurance) is essential.

Our recruitment process treats all job applications equally, regardless of age, disability, gender identity, race, ethnicity, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation or any other equality characteristic. That said, we particularly encourage applications from people from Black, Asian and other minority ethnic (BAME) backgrounds, as this group are currently under-represented throughout the Authority.
