Strategic Planners

Central London SE1

£35,744 - £46,815 per annum

London has evolved over many decades, resulting in an extraordinary web of distinctive residential streets, squares, markets parks, offices, industrial and creative spaces. The built environment we see today, the legacy of previous generations has not just shaped the way London looks but has had a profound impact on how and where we live, work, study and socialise with one another. London is in another period of growth and these positions provide a great opportunity to help deliver this phase of London’s development and growth.

The role is within the Development Management section of the Planning Unit where you will be part of a high-quality strategic planning service dealing with a huge variety of applications and competing priorities. You will be politically astute and have a proven track record of dealing with complex strategic planning issues preferably in London.

You will assess planning applications that are referred to the Mayor and work in collaboration with boroughs to deliver the Good Growth ambitions of the London Plan. You will understand how to apply the London Plan in a pragmatic and sensible way that encourages development and delivers the mayor’s objectives.

A detailed knowledge and understanding of national and regional planning and development issues, legal processes and policy trends are essential. You will be expected to present reports to the Mayor and Deputy Mayors directly, so you will need excellent, written and verbal communication skills. You will also need exceptional negotiation skills and the ability to work successfully with a range of internal and external stakeholders.

You will have a degree/post graduate qualification in planning or equivalent with eligibility for RTPI membership. You will also have demonstrable post-qualification experience in dealing with sensitive planning issues.

In addition to a good salary package, we offer an attractive range of benefits including 30 days’ annual leave, interest free season ticket loan, interest free bicycle loan, childcare voucher scheme and a career average pension scheme.

This role will be based at London Fire Brigade’s Head Office (Union Street SE1 0LL).  At present GLA staff are working largely from home, with office space available.  Over the coming weeks and months, we will be moving to hybrid working as part of this, you will need to split your time between home working and coming into the office.

We are committed to being an inclusive employer and we are happy to consider flexible working arrangements. We would welcome applications from candidates who are seeking part time work as this role is open to job share.
