Planning Assistant (Policy) Maternity Cover

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Planning and Housing Strategy Team to help the Council progress key planning policy projects particularly the Climate Emergency Review of the Local Plan and Area Action Plan for South Lancaster including Bailrigg Garden Village. We are looking for an individual who is enthusiastic to become involved in this work which will in turn provide invaluable career development experience.

Supporting experienced colleagues, you will work on a wide range of planning policy areas to support the Council with both the Review of the Local Plan and contribute to preparing the development plan that will guide the Bailrigg Garden Village. You will be involved in supporting public consultation events.

Ideally the Council wishes to appoint someone with relevant experience in a planning role, but the successful applicant may be a recent graduate, potentially in geography or environmental sciences graduate with an interest in pursuing a career in planning. This really is an ideal opportunity to work with knowledgeable colleagues to learn skills and gain experience at a busy local authority to further a career in town planning.

Reporting to the Principal Planning Policy Officer, you will be part of the core planning policy group which sites within the Planning and Housing Strategy Team.

The post holder will be expected to have a knowledge and interest in current planning issues, including approaches to achieving sustainable development to help meet the Council’s ambitions on Climate Change.

You must therefore have great communication and inter-personal and presentation skills, as well as an ability to work to tight deadlines. A positive attitude to achieving effective team working is essential. Sourcing, collating, and interpreting information is a key skill for this role. Good ICT Skills are required; knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is also desirable.

This post is temporary to cover maternity leave. The hours of work are 37 hours per week, generally working in normal office hours Monday to Friday. There is a requirement to attend and support meetings and consultation events on weekday evenings, and, only very occasionally, on Saturdays. This post is currently nominally based at Morecambe Town Hall.

The Council currently operates an excellent Flexible Working Hours Scheme which applies to this post. Subject to the needs of this business, this may allow employees to work between the hours of 6:00am-10:30pm.

The post-holder must have a valid UK driving licence and be prepared and capable of attending site visits throughout the district which will include site visits in remote and isolated locations.

For an informal discussion please contact Paul Hatch, Principal Planning Policy Officer on 01524 582329.

Lancaster City Council has unanimously declared a climate emergency and are working towards reducing carbon emissions to net-zero by 2030. As part of this role, you will be expected to participate and work towards reducing carbon emissions.

We are a Forces Friendly employer, and an Armed Forces Covenant committed organisation. We welcome applications from defence reserves and other members of our armed forces community.

Excellent benefits include: A Local Government Pension Scheme (the Council makes a 15.5% contribution). Discounted gym membership and discount on days out, activities and retail.

Please note that due to the volume of applications we receive we are unable to update all applicants individually. If you do not receive a response from us within 2 weeks of the closing date then your application will have unfortunately been unsuccessful in progressing to interview.
