It provides a diverse, multilayered and evolving range of services to both citizens and visitors to Dublin, which include the provision of housing, planning, employment, environmental, roads and traffic, leisure and community services.

An opportunity now exists in Dublin City Council for the position of Deputy City Planning Officer.

The position of Deputy City Planning Officer is a crucial one in the City Council. It plays a vital role in the orderly development of the City. Reporting to the Dublin City Planning Officer, the post holder will lead and manage a team of professionals assigned to either Land Use Policy or Development Management duties and will have specific delegatory responsibilities and functions.

The successful candidate will:

  • Each candidate must, on the latest date for receipt of completed application forms:-
  • Hold a qualification in Planning (at least level 8 on the National Framework of Qualifications);
  • Have, post the qualification above, at least nine years satisfactory relevant and strategic level experience in planning
  • Possess a high standard of technical training and experience
  • Possess a high standard of administrative and strategic management experience; and
  • Have a satisfactory knowledge of public administration in Ireland and experience of administration or management at a high level.

The ideal candidate will also:

  • Have a career record that demonstrates the necessary vision, leadership, management and interpersonal skills to lead staff in the delivery of a top quality planning service;
  • Have a good understanding of, and relevant managerial experience in urban planning;
  • Have a good awareness of the current political environment and an ability to work effectively with elected public representatives in a manner which facilitates the social, physical development of the city;
  • Have a capacity to work effectively with others, in order to optimise their contribution to the achievement of organisational goals and objectives;
  • Have an ability to lead, co-ordinate and motivate a number of multi-disciplinary teams;
  • Have excellent communication skills and be capable of working effectively in a public forum with Elected Councillors; informing and influencing the decision making process;
  • Have the ability to manage financial resources within a budgetary control framework;
  • Have excellent organisational skills, and an understanding of the role of line managers;
  • Have an excellent knowledge and awareness of Health and Safety Legislation and Regulations, their implications for the organisation and the employee, and their application in the workplace;
  • Have an understanding of the role and duties of managers in safety and personnel management in the workplace.
