The Role

As the Deputy Team Leader, you will contribute to the effective management of the Planning Service and play a vital role in supporting the Development Management Team Leader and Service Manager. 

You will oversee efficient and timely consideration of planning applications and prepare committee reports and other planning documentation. Providing clear briefings to management, you will assist with budgeting and ensure all performance targets are met.

Supervising your team of planners, you will provide direction on case work and ensure a high level of motivation and discipline. You will monitor team performance, undertake regular 1-2-1 meetings and update training and policy knowledge when necessary.

About You

To be considered as the Deputy Team Leader, you will need:

  • Experience of supervising or mentoring staff within a Development Management context (ideally within Local Government)
  • Demonstrable experience of processing planning applications of varying nature and complexity, including defending decisions at appeal
  • Experience of making informed and robust planning decisions
  • Experience of presenting planning applications to committees
  • Full understanding of administrative and legal procedures of planning control in Local Government and ability to apply this in practice
  • Detailed knowledge of the context within which planning decisions are made, understanding the application of weight to conflicting objectives having regard to planning guidance and case law
  • Full membership of or eligibility for full membership of a recognised professional body related to the work of the team
  • A graduate and/or post-graduate degree in Planning, or other demonstrably relevant degree

Experience of determining planning applications under delegated authority would be desirable.

Other organisations may call this role Deputy Planning Team Leader, Deputy Development Management Team Leader, Assistant Planning Team Leader, or Planning Service Deputy Leader.
