About the Role

SSEN Transmission are currently seeking a highly motivated and experienced Lead Consents & Environment Manager to support the Development and consenting of major, large-scale terrestrial Transmission infrastructure across Scotland. You will manage a professional team covering a portfolio of iconic, Critical National Infrastructure projects, ensuring that resources are effectively deployed for environmental optioneering, assessment and consenting deliverables.

As a mass transporter of renewable energy, we have a major role to play in supporting delivery of Scotland and the UK’s 2030 net zero targets, connecting new onshore and offshore renewables generation and transporting the power generated to demand centres in the rest of Scotland and beyond.

In addition to working on iconic projects, you will also join a multi-award winning team (and this year shortlisted for the RTPI “In-house Planning Team of the Year”) recognised for our sector leading planning and sustainability initiatives. There will be a high level of autonomy for your projects with the benefit of experienced support and guidance where required.

The key responsibilities involved are as follows:

  • Lead, develop and motivate a strong team of consents and environment managers, driving the delivery of environmental and consenting activities throughout the project development phases within your region.
  • Responsible for coordinating your team’s input to ensure all environmental, planning, legal and regulatory obligations are fully incorporated into our environmental optioneering, EIA and consenting activities.
  • Ensuring appropriate governance, programme and risk management is effectively and consistently applied. Develop mutually beneficial senior stakeholder relationships both internally and externally (incl. consenting bodies, statutory authorities, key consultees, government departments and Scottish Ministers) to build an environment of mutually supportive relationships, faciliting project delivery and NetZero targets.
  • Coordinate regional and national engagement activities to drive business value, build consensus, support policy change and external advocacy. This should ensure that SSEN Transmission is recognised as industry leaders in relation to Consenting and Environmental practice.

What do I need?

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

  • In depth knowledge of the Scottish Planning Process, Consenting regimes and Environmental Impact Assessment legislation.
  • Demonstrable Project Management experience of how to manage all aspects of the delivery of major projects e.g., project definition and set up, management of consultants, costs, risk, quality and timing is essential to the success of this role.
  • Ideally you will have a Planning or Environmental related degree, preferably with post graduate qualification coupled with experience in a relevant industry (e.g., infrastructure, environmental / planning consultancy dealing with major consenting projects). Membership of an appropriate planning or environmental professional body is also desirable.
  • A willingness to contribute, adapt, and learn within a busy, fast-moving team, dealing with challenges and opportunities across am extensive workload. Innovation and new ideas are welcomed where they can add value and improve the consenting approach and will be rewarded with good opportunities for long term career progressions within this key sector.
  • A positive ‘can do’ attitude to delivering complex and challenging packages of work, focused on finding and driving forward solutions and innovation.
