We are seeking an experienced Senior Planning Officer to join our Development Management team of Professional Planning Officers and Technical/Administrative Support Staff who work closely together to improve the quality of the built and natural environment across the district.

This role will work in an area team on a case load of varying scales of applications, dealing with all stages of the development management process giving pre-application advice, making site visits, writing reports, making recommendations on your own cases, signing decisions on planning officer’s cases, discharging conditions and representing the council in appeals and at planning committee.

We are a values-based organisation all working together to achieve our vision of “Making Teignbridge a healthy and desirable place where people want to live, work and visit”.  We do this by taking personal ownership for the quality of the work we do, the quality of the relationships we develop and for driving improvements in our services.

We can offer:

  • A generous flexi scheme with up to 2 days flexi per month that can be taken.
  • Agile working – Part office based, and part home based.
  • A newly refurbished zero carbon emissions office space.
  • Generous annual leave and wellbeing package.
  • Generously discounted gym membership at Teignbridge District Council Leisure Centres.
  • Opportunities for career and self-development.

You need to:

  • Have a relevant degree/diploma in Town and Country Planning.
  • Have recent and relevant skills and knowledge relating to Development Management.
  • Have several years of experience within a Local Planning Authority, preferably in a rural location, and are a member or eligible for RTPI Membership.
  • Have experience of dealing with a wide range of complexity of planning applications including prior approvals and major planning applications.
  • Be self-motivated, organised and capable of managing your own workload within defined timescales using performance management tools to ensure that no statutory deadlines are missed.
  • Have good IT and technical skills to maintain your own electronic files and process applications.
  • Be a problem solver, taking on difficult challenges and finding solutions.
  • Enjoy helping people, remaining patient, level-headed and cool under pressure.
  • Pay attention to detail as well as the overall picture and can clearly understand and interpret development plans and their impact on the immediate and wider area.
  • Communicate clearly in person, in writing and on the phone. You can explain complicated procedures and are comfortable negotiating changes.
  • Have good report writing and presentation skills.
  • Have a full driving licence and can undertake site visits around the District.
