Principal Heritage and Planning Officer
SALARY: Grade 9 £42,403 - £47,420
Torfaen is the third smallest County Borough in Wales and is situated just north of the M4 corridor bordered by Monmouthshire, Newport, Caerphilly and Blaenau Gwent. Torfaen is also the third most densely populated local authority area in Wales and has a population of over 91,000. It has a great iron, steel and coal mining heritage and is home to Blaenavon which was inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2000. Cwmbran, the first of only two New Towns to be built in Wales, is the largest settlement in Torfaen. The County Borough has 255 Listed Buildings, 26 Scheduled Ancient Monuments and 6 Conservation Areas
This is an exciting opportunity for a candidate to take up a key role with the Council’s Development Management service. The service plays an essential role in delivering development projects by early engagement, negotiation and ongoing advice. This post is integral to this process and the drive, vision and enthusiasm of the successful candidate will ensure heritage assets are a vital consideration and form an essential part of the Councils ambitious placemaking agenda.
The Council has recently embarked on the review of the Torfaen Local Development Plan and there is a timely opportunity for the post holder to contribute to shaping the strategy, relevant polices and supplementary planning guidance. Working closely with the Team Leader (Enforcement) the post holder will also provide key advice to ensure the protection of heritage assets. The successful candidate would also have an exciting and rewarding chance to assist in the management and development of the skills of officers in a friendly, enthusiastic, helpful and committed Development Management service.
