About the role
Exciting things are happening here in East Devon, making it a very rewarding time to work at East Devon District Council. With over 18,000 new homes planned for development by 2040 together with major employment and regeneration projects, this is your chance to make a valuable impact on the future of the district as you help shape some of the most prominent development proposals.
As Principal Planning Officer, you will head up one of the three area Development Management teams comprised of planning officers and an enforcement officer who deal with a broad range of commercial and residential planning applications and investigations. From Listed Building consent to commercial plans, you will champion high quality development across the district to ensure that applications are dealt with in good time and that excellent customer service is provided. Your varied role will include mentoring and developing your team, managing major planning applications, visiting and inspecting sites and negotiating with agents. With a passion for the local area, you will keep the wider strategic priorities of the Council in mind as you seek to achieve the Council’s objectives and do great things for East Devon.
About you
First and foremost, you will have a postgraduate Planning qualification and significant experience of development management, along with RTPI membership. You will combine an up-to-date knowledge of the planning system with first-class leadership and communication skills and bring a track record of coaching people, building relationships and working collaboratively to deliver effective services. Influential, organised and credible, you’re someone who thrives on challenge, consistently delivers great results and makes things happen rather than waiting for chances to come. You will also need a driving licence and be able to travel as required (reasonable adjustments may be possible according to the Equality Act).
