Planning Officers x2

Permanent

£28,163 - £37,938 per annum (career graded)

37 hours per week*

Are you a town planner looking for the next step in your career? Or are you a newly qualified graduate in planning or related subject looking to start out on your career?

We are seeking two Planning Officers to join our dynamic Development Management team of Planners and Technical/Administrative Support Staff who all work together to deliver high-quality developments, improve the quality of the built and natural environment across the district and help make Teignbridge a healthy and desirable place to live, work and visit.

*Whilst this role is full-time we will consider applicants looking for compressed work patterns or slightly less than full-time hours.

We do things well and keep developing

Our team has worked hard to improve our performance over the last year, and we are now a high performing team. We are seeking others who share our passion for best practice in our decision making and excellent customer service.

Our planning officers work in geographical area teams and, depending on your level of experience, you will have a case load of varying scales of applications, dealing with all stages of the development management process. This will include giving pre-application advice, making site visits, writing reports, making recommendations on your own cases and representing the council in appeals and at planning committee. Training and mentoring will be given to inexperienced staff to help you learn and grow in your new career with us and will encourage and support ongoing training and development for all team members.

We offer a flexible working environment where everyone works in the office at least 50% of their week and may work the remainder at home should they wish. New staff are required to be office based for the first two months to help build relationships and ensure joined up working.

We’re better together

Teignbridge is a beautiful area of South Devon which stretches from the west side of Exeter, with Dartmoor to the north and the coastline to the south.  Serving a growing community of c.134,800 residents, and a thriving tourist population, Teignbridge District Council is a forward-thinking authority with a firm focus on what’s truly needed in the long term. With a clear ten year strategy; sustainable travel, high-quality neighbourhoods, collaborative partnerships, healthier living, and quality affordable housing all feature highly in pursuit of “making Teignbridge a healthy and desirable place where people want to live, work and visit”.

We are an equal opportunities employer committed to a diverse and inclusive organisation. We welcome applications from all qualified candidates regardless of their age, caring responsibilities, disability, gender/sex, gender reassignment/trans status, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sexual orientation and socio-economic status. We also welcome applications from military veterans and their families.

We can offer:

  • Generous Local Government Pension Scheme.
  • Hybrid and flexible working – minimum 50% office based, and part home based.
  • Paid Professional Membership (RTPI) fee subject to local terms & conditions.
  • Free car parking (we also have close access to a mainline train station).
  • A refurbished modern zero carbon emissions office space.
  • Generous annual leave and wellbeing package.
  • Heavily discounted membership at Teignbridge District Council Leisure Centres.
  • Cycle to Work Scheme.
  • Opportunities for career and self-development.
  • 24/7 employee discount access and employee assistance support.

You are a Teignbridge District Council fit if you have:

A degree/diploma in Town and Country Planning or related subject.

  • Recent and relevant skills and knowledge relating to Development Management.
  • Experience within a Local Planning Authority, preferably in a rural location
  • membership of the RTPI.
  • A full driving licence and be able to undertake site visits around the District as public transport is limited.

It is not expected everyone will be able to demonstrate all the above; we welcome graduates or those who have some experience in planning already.

It is vital to read the job description and person specification for this role - it will help you understand whether your knowledge, skills and experience match the job requirements. In your supporting statement please tell us how you meet each of the essential criteria we ask for in the person specification.

For an informal discussion please contact Ian Perry, Cheryl Stansbury or Dave Kenyon on 01626 215743.
